Thomas died in the Kyle Union Poorhouse in Ayr aged 69 [18 Nov 1904]
The 'Poor law Unions' were set up in Scotland in 1845. Each Union was governed by a Board of Guardians and not abolished untill 1948. If elderly people were taken into the workhouse under the poorlaw they usually stayed there until they died and were buried as paupers. It is strange that Thomas had a large family and yet ended his life under such circumstances. Although still alive in 1891 he was not shown on the census for his family home, but at his daughte Rachael's home at Coylton, Ayrs.

Yet Catherine's parents were clearly named on Thomas and Catherines wedding certificate as THOMAS McHUTCHEON (not JAMES) and her mother named ALICE SMITH (not CATHERINE).

He changed his surname to Dale probably at marriage. His forebears originated from Ireland emigrating to Ayr, in Ayrshire Scotland then moved to Bute and finally back to Ayr.
John was the father of Girtrude Dale. My Father Robert Gregg was 1st cousin to Girtude Dale through his mother Margaret Doyle(sister to John Doyle/Dale).
Therefor Girtrude was my 1st cousin once removed on the Gregg blood line. Girtrude Dale married my mother's brother James Perry and also became my Aunt through marriage. Gertrude's children became my 1st cousins through their father James Perry's bloodline [ADG1997].
