Robert's surname was spelled GREIG on his birth certificate. Robert volunteered for Army Service during World War I at 17 years of age. After returning from active duty in Europe with the Royal Scots Regiment he started his career as a football player in Scotland. He emigrated to USA via Canada in May 1926 to join the newly formed North American Football League.

Robert met and married Margaret Perry and they lived and worked in Canada, and then America where their first two children, Margaret & Robert were born. They then returned to Scotland in late C.1934 and later to Suffolk England. They lived and worked on an agricultural smallholding at Newborn - where in 1940 son Archibald was born. During World War II they moved to Ipswich where they remained for the rest of their lives. Alexander was born in Sunderland County Durham in 1944. Margaret his mother had temporarily travelled there for the birth.
Robert died aged 56 on 4 Nov 1955 at Ipswich Suffolk England. An elder brother John died in Ballochmyle Hospital Ayrshire earlier that same year aged 69. Two 'comedians' in that Robert was born and baptised GREIG and used GREGG whereas John was born and baptised GREGG and used GREIG!
