Samuel DOYLE
Born ABT 1829, Ireland. (Went to live in Australia 1857)
Died 1896, Australia
From Peter Woolley Australia June 2011:
Hi Greggs, Samuel Doyle, son of Michael and Rachael Doyle sailed to Australia from Liverpool to Sydney with his wife Margaret and daughter Eliza in 1857, aboard the 'Golconda'. The immigration documents state Samuel's age as 28 years, from Drumara County Down. He is a labourer. His parents Michael and Rachel are living in County Down Ireland. Samuel and Margaret are listed as Church of England.
I have a copy of a letter from James Doyle c1895 to Samuel describing the location of family members. Although the letter is not dated it contains information that places it c.1895 The writer James is the nephew of Samuel, and seems to be the son of John Doyle. He says of Samuel's father "your father is dead about 18 years ago, my father died about the same time " (so around 1877). He also says "your brother Thomas is somewhere in England, I think it is in Cumberland".
The Doyle information has come to light as Samuel Doyle was married to Margaret Adgey of Co Antrim. She married Samuel in Belfast c.1852.( My gggrandmother was her sister Letitia Adgey). Best regards Peter

The 'Poor law Unions' were set up in Scotland in 1845. Each Union was governed by a Board of Guardians and not abolished untill 1948. If elderly people were taken into the workhouse under the poorlaw they usually stayed there untill they died and were buried as paupers. It is strange that Thomas had a large family and yet ended his life under such circumstances. Although still alive in 1891 he was not shown on the census for his family home.

June 2011: Michael and Rachael Doyle came to Scotland after 1857 when they were shown as living in County Down Ireland.
Their son Samuel went to Australia 1n 1857, and on the immigration documents his parents Michael and Rachel are shown as living in County Down Ireland.
To date we also have no record of them being in Scotland for the 1861 Census, and on the 1871 Census there are only grandchildren listed as living with Michael and Rachael.
There is evidence to suggest some of their chidren may have gone to Scotland as early as 1855
FROM THE DOYLE PAGE - http://www.doyle.com.au/history_pt5.htm :
"The Great Hunger" or "Potato Famine" began in Ireland towards the Autumn of 1845, and continued up to 1851, and ended in the deaths of an estimated 1,000,000 Irish men, women, and children (or about one out of every nine inhabitants).
In 1800, some 5,000,000 people lived in Ireland. By the autumn of 1845, when the Great Famine struck, there were more than 8,000,000. This was the largest increase in the population of Ireland in history.
In September of 1845, a fungus called Phytophthora Infestans was infecting Ireland's potato crops, devastating the potato population. More than half the Irish potato crop failed in 1845. This event is what started The Great Famine in Ireland.
An estimated 1,500,000 Irish emigrated from 1845 to 1851, and upwards of 45% of them were dying of starvation or disease in cramped quarters aboard the "coffin ships" on their journey, or shortly after their arrival in the New World.
The Doyle's and Wilson's may well have arrived in Ayrshire Scotland from County Down following the results to the above circumstances
