First Generation

The International Genealogical Index (IGI) reports that on 13 Oct 1810 John Garig (sic) married Christian Campbell, daughter of William Campbell & Marrion ADAM, in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland[1]. My Scotland cousins tell me that Christian is a common variant of Christina. My grandmother used the diminutive Kirsti.

John Greig and Cristian his wife had the following known children:

1. John GREIG.

The International Genealogical Index (IGI) reports that on 13 Oct 1810 John Garig (sic) married Christian Campbell, daughter of William Campbell & Marrion ADAM, in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland. My Scotland cousins tell me that Christian is a common variant of Christina. My grandmother used the diminutive Kirsti.

John Greig and Christian his wife had the following known children:

2 i. John (~1811-1853)
3 ii. William (~1812-1870)
4 iii. Robert (~1819-1879)
5 iv. James (~1832-)

They MAY have had other children, including a daughter Marion.

The death certificate for son Robert, registered in 1879, states that his father John Greig worked as a cotton weaver and was deceased by 1879.

Second Generation

2. John GREIG. John is our direct ancestor. We have been unable to confirm his birth or death dates. We estimate he was born about 1811 and died between 1853 and 1859[2]. We know he worked as a brick moulder[3]. My grandmother, Jeanie LIND m.s. Montgomery, grew up knowing her maternal grandmother, so heard many family stories. Grandma said that her grandfather John Greig disappeared mysteriously one night. He had been working as a night watchman in a shipyard, and one night never came home. His body was never found. John’s wife and children always assumed that he fell into the sea and drowned. We’ve been unable to confirm her story. There is no death registration, so either the death was not recorded (no body, no proof of death) or he disappeared prior to 1855.

[1] Old Parish Register, Kilwinning
[2] John was deceased when his eldest son was married in 1859. His youngest son appears as an 8-year-old in the 1861 Kilwinning census.
[3] Occupation stated on the 1851 census, as well as on marriage registrations for several of his children.

On 30 Jul 1836 when John was 25, he married Jean (Jane) GALT, in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland[4-5]. The marriage is also recorded in Irvine Parish OPR, where Jane’s family worshipped. Note that in Scotland the names Jane and Jean are interchangeable.

Jane Greig, m.s. Galt was born on 5 Aug 1816 in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland and is the daughter of John GALT & Agnes GUTHRIE. Jane died in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland on 17 Jul 1893 at age 76. Although she is reportedly buried in Irvine Parish Churchyard[6], there is a stone to her memory in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland.

John Greig and Jane Galt had the following children:

6 i. Christina (1836-1910)
7 ii. John (1838-)
8 iii. Agnes (~1841-)
9 iv. Janet (1845-1918)
10 v. Rachel (~1847-1863)
11 vi. William (~1850-)
12 vii. Alexander (1852-)

3. William GREIG.
William was born about 1812 in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland and died there on 16 Nov 1870 at age 58. In the 1861 Kilwinning census, William was living on Main Street, Kilwinning, next door to Jane Greig, widow
[7]. On 24 Nov 1839 when William was 27, he married Mary CARRANDUFF, in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland. Mary was born about 1818 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. They had the following children:

13 i. John (~1841-)
14 ii. William (~1843-1915)
15 iii. James (~1846-)
16 iv. Robert (~1849-)
17 v. Elizabeth Templeton (~1853-1874)
18 vi. Mary (~1855-1906)
19 vii. Ann (~1857-1940)
20 viii. Christina Campbell (1860-1920)

4. Robert GREIG.
Robert Greig was living on the other side of Jane Greig, widow, in the 1861 Kilwinning census. We assume that the Greig men are brothers and taking care of the widow of their deceased brother
[8]. In that census Robert listed his occupation as Master Tailor. We estimate his birth date as Jul 1819, and know that he was born in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland. Robert died in Main Street, Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland on 3 Sep 1879 at age 60.

On 7 Nov 1840 when Robert was 21, he married Janet LINDSAY, in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland. Jane was born about 1829 in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland. They had the following children:

21 i. John (~1843-)
22 ii. Robert (~1846-)
23 iii. William (~1848-)
24 iv. Janet L. (~1851-)
25 v. James P. (~1856-)
26 vi. Thomas Wilson (1863-)

[6] Jeanie Montgomery LIND always said that her grandparents were buried in the Irvine Churchyard.
[7] We know from the names and ages of the children living with their mother in 1861 that this Jane Greig our ancestor and the widow of John Greig.
[8] Death registrations naming their parents confirm that William and Robert are brothers. We therefore conclude that John is also their brother.

5. James GREIG.
The IGI lists another Greig, born about 1832. Despite the age difference between James and John, we list James as a possible son of John Greig and Christian Campbell. We also know that James had a wife, Elizabeth, m.s. unknown.

The 1851 Kilwinning census includes this entry:

  •
  • 51, Durains Pit –

James Greig, lodger, head, age19, weaver of light silk, born Kilwinning.

Elizabeth Greig, lodger, married, weaver’s wife, born Kilwinning

  •

On 22 Feb 1861 when Christina was 24, she married William WHITE, son of Alexander WHITE & Mary CUNNINGHAM, in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland. William was born about 1832 and died on 17 Jun 1876 at age 44. He, too, is buried in Auchenleck Cemetery[10]. Christina and William had the following children:

    8. Agnes GREIG. Agnes was born about 1841 in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland. On 31 Dec 1861 when Agnes was 20, she married Thomas RAE, son of Thomas RAE & Mary McMillan, in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland. Thomas was born in 1842. Thomas and Agnes had the following children:

    45 v. Agnes (1872-)
    46 vi. John (1874-)

    9.
Janet GREIG.[12] Janet is my our direct ancestor through her daughter, Jane (Jeanie) Galt Montgomery. Janet Greig was born in 1845 in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland. She died at 15 Rennie St., Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland on 1 Dec 1918 at age 73.

On Hogmany, 31 Dec 1875, when she was 30, Janet Greig married James Grant MONTGOMERY, son of Hugh MONTGOMERIE & Mary Grant, in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland. He was born on 30 Jan 1840 in Five Roads, Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland. James Grant Montgomery died in 6 Wards Place, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland on 19 Mar 1912 at age 72. He is buried in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland.

James Grant Montgomery and Janet Greig had the following children:

    47 i. John LIND (1877-~1915)
    48 ii. James (1880-1884)
    49 iii. Thomas OSBORNE (1883-1971)
    50 iv.
    Jane GALT (1885-1982)

    10. Rachel GREIG. Born about 1847 in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland. Rachel died in Stevenson, Ayrshire, Scotland on 31 Aug 1863, she was 16.

    11. William GREIG. Born about Nov 1850 in Dreghorn, Ayrshire, Scotland.

    12. Alexander GREIG[13] Alexander was born in 1852/1853 in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland. We estimate the earliest possible date for his father’s disappearance is buried in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. On 8 Oct 1872 when Alexander was 20, he married Jessie STEWART, daughter of James STEWART & Jane BRYDEN, in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland. Born about 1852. Jessie died in Ayrshire, Scotland on 23 Jan 1884, she was 32. Alexander is buried in the Bridgend Cemetery, Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland.

Alexander Greig and Jessie Stewart had the following children:

    51 i. John (1872-1895)
    52 ii. James (~1879-1880)
    53 iii. Alexander (~1881-1900)
    54 iv. Janet (>1871-)
    55 v. Jessie (>1871-)
    56 vi. Louisa (1882-)

When my grandmother, Jeanie Montgomery LIND, spoke of her family, she spoke of Uncle Sandy and his children. She never spoke of her own childhood, or of her cousins in Fergushill and Bensley. Uncle Sandy’s family had all the things that Grandma’s parents did not. They lived in Kilmarnock, while Grandma grew up in the miner’s rows at Fergushill, Kilwinning. Cousin Janet Greig was a keyboard musician, playing both organ and piano. She taught my grandmother to play the piano. Alexander was ‘a promising medical student’[14] when he died at age 19. Jessie married and moved to Australia. As an adult, Louisa traveled all over the world.

Without batting an eyelash, Grandma reported that Uncle Sandy went bankrupt twice: once in coal and once in potatoes[15]. He was most successful as a potato merchant. He took on his brother-in-law James Montgomery and James’ son Tom. Tom made potatoes his career, opening Thomas Montgomery and Sons, Potato Merchants in Kilmarnock. The business ultimately closed about 1980 when it could no longer compete with the mass marketing techniques of contemporary produce sales.

[12] Photographs available for individuals coded in GREEN.
[13] We have a photograph which we believe is of Alexander Greig and his wife.
[14] Again, Jeanie Montgomery LIND’s description.
[15] Documents support a bankruptcy filed in Kilwinning in 1896. The document shows that Alexander Greig did not cause the bankruptcy by mismanagement or illegal use of business funds.
