John GREGG

Born May 1753, Rankinston Ayrs
Christened 13 May 1753, Coylton
IGI - name: John Greg gender: Male baptism/christening date: 15 Apr 1753 baptism/christening place: , COYLTON, AYR, SCOTLAND father's name: John Greg mother's name: Jean Graham indexing project (batch) number: C11583-2 system origin: Scotland-VR source film number: 1041336

This John was the second child to be named John in his family. Presumably the first died in infancy.

OPR COYLTON: 'John lawful son to John Greg in Rankinston and Jean Graham his spouse baptised before witnesses John McMurtree and Matthew Wallace 13th May 1753'.

OPR STRAITON: 'Mary child begot to John Gregg younger in Straiton born 9th may 1781'. If this record relates to this John Gregg then we can assume his father also to be John Gregg. The childs mother was not named so can we assume that although Mary was iligitimate, she was named after her mother Mary McCulloch. A John Gregg later married Mary McCulloch in 1784. Their second child was named Jean possibly after John's mother Jean Graham?

OPR STRAITON:' Mary child begot to John Gregg younger in Straiton born 9th May 1781'. We may assume that as the child was named Mary, she was probaly an iligitimate child to John Gregg and his future wife Mary McCulloch, and so we will attribute her to this couple.

Hello. Firstly, I'd like to say how impressed I am with your Gregg Website.
I am a descendant of Alexander Galbraith b. 1743 Dalmellington and Mary Cool b. 1765. Their children were:
Barbara Galbraith bn 1794 Dalmellington m. Ivie Gregg b. 1795,
James Galbraith bn 1797 Dalmellngton m. Janet Campbell Jamieson (My Gt x 2 Grandparents)
Three other sibblings died either in infancy or early adulthood.
The Galbraith's lived at a farm in Pennyvenie, Dalmellington,

The parents of Alexander (b.1743) were John Galbraith b.1743 and Margaret Gregg b.1724 Ayr, Ayrshire (Margaret Gregg's parents were James Greg(g) and Jane Guthrie.
I am interested in researching the Gregg/Galbraith family connection, as there are at least two family connections that I can see so far.
I was wondering if you can suggest any websites or other material that would be of interest. Recently, I was lucky enough to find a photo of my Gt x 2 Grandfather James Galbraith bn 1797 (Brother of Barbara Gregg nee Galbraith bn 1794)
Kind regards, Lyn Fannin
