JEAN DENHOLM GIBSON

Alias Jean GREGG (27 Nov 1818)
Born 1791, Coylton Ayrs Scotland
Died 3 Feb 1866, 10 James St. Tarbolton, Ayrshire, Scotland
Reference ID:2:18H4NT9Statutory Deaths 1866:Tarbolton:" Jean Gregg widow of John Gregg Silk Weaver, 1866 Februsary 3rd. at 10 James Street Tarbolton, Age 75 years, Parents James Gibson weaver(Deceased), Margaret Gibson M/S Denholm(deceased). Bronchitis. Informant WIlliam Gregg son, Not Present "

Jean Gibson's life seems to have been tragic. Her father James Gibson[a miller at Coylton] died aged about 40 in 1791 the same year she was born. Her daughter Janet died age 14 in 1836 and son James died in February 1840 aged 21.That same year Jean's husband John Gregg died in July 1840 age 42 leaving her with 4 young children. Jeans youngest daughter, also named Jean, had an illegitimate child at age 21 on 11th August 1855. However, Jean Gibson senior survived until she was 75 of age.

Email: Ann Nicholson July 2001: Hi Alec, Just a brief outline of Jean Gibson's siblings, Henry married Agnes Gray. Henry ran the post office and general store. Children : John was a Physician and Surgeon qualifying in Glasgow, Henry, he was the Henry who was the Tarbolton school teacher ( he was the enumerator on the 1851 census).

The Burning of Walston Toll and Other Malicious Acts. On Tuesday 20th June 1815.
(See full story: http://www.ayrshirehistory.org.uk/WallstonToll/wallstontoll.htm)
Alexander and James Gibson, sons of John Gibson of Crawfordston farm, Tarbolton parish, were convicted of rioting and imprisoned, when they were released they and a group of other rioters appealed against their conviction. They won and were given compensation. Alexander and James gave the money to Henry to help his business.
The Gibson's are from my maternal line, with Scottish records being full of information I decided to do all the lines as far as I can. This is proving most interesting. Hope all this makes sense. Regards Ann :-)
