OPR Kilmarnock DEATH 8 Aug 1837: 'Mr James Gregg Writer in Kilmarnock from number 1 Rutland Square is Buried in the New Ground. Died aged 68 of Apoplexy'

Although relationship to James Greg and Janet Henderson is recorded in parish records, it is assumed[ADG1997] that this is the same person who married Lewis Brown. James is later described as a writer - being lawyer/solicitor in Scotland. James named his first two children after his wifes parents - Anne and William. His next two were named James and Janet after his own parents.
In June 1807 James Gregg was known as Writer and Town Clerk, Kilmarnock

This James was the third boy to be named James. The older brothers must have died prior to 1767.

May 2004. From The archives of Gebbie & Wilson Solicitors of Starthaven. 'William Gebbie - Founder of Gebbie & Wilson Solicitors of Starthaven. 'On 1st June 1807, William was apprenticed as a Lawyer to JAMES GREGG, Writer and Town Clerk, Kilmarnock. After a five years apprenticeship, from which he was honourably discharged on 13th June 1812 (aged 18), he proceeded to Glasgow where he found congenial work at the University and in the office of Grahame & Mitchell, Writers.

For reasons not entirely clear, Strathaven was chosen as the place to set up his own practice and he arrived in September 1816. Interestingly, the original of the letter to his mother is, together with copies of his first business correspondence dated 5th September 1816, still held in the archives of the firm. He was formally admitted as a Procurator before the Sheriff Court in Hamilton on 22nd November 1816 and continued to practice until his death on 11th April 1865 in his 72nd Year.'

13 Feb 2006: Hi,
Regarding Lewis or Lowis Gregg, daughter of James Gregg and Lewis Brown who married James Sym, her death is 26th August 1860, not 1880 as you have it on the site. I extracted it while trawling through the years 1855-1875 for Ayrshire at our local Family History centre. I've just verified the year by the index of deaths on Scotlandspeople. I knew 1880 could not be correct as the place of burial was stated and if I remember correctly 1860 was the last year that this was done The notes I made at the time read Widow of a physician .. Sym Dies Wellingford Cottage Ayr of general paralysis, buried New Kilpatrick, informant Andrew Sym brother in law, father James Gregg writer mother Lewis Brown both deceased
I mistakenly thought I had a link to this family but as the child Lilias born 1810 died unmarried I need another Lilias Gregg, who unfortunately seems to have died pre 1855. I will keep them on my file and add a link to your website, Marna Fielding.

13 Feb 2006: Thanks to your website I have located my Lilias Gregg [P238]. I have information on her descendants and her spouse William Love's second marriage if you are interested,
Marna Feilding
