Joan Fisher Jul 2004:
William "Will" McBride (son of James McBride and Sarah Gregg) married Janet Scott Hyslop in 1869. He emigrated to the U.S. after that date and he died on the 21 September 1874 at Seneca, Kansas, age 29. Janet returned to England after the death of her husband, taking her two living sons with her.
Their son William James McBride was probably born in 1874. I think the Scotch Valley History is talking about the son and not the father when it says, "William was also a sportsman and played criket and football."
In 1911 he lived at 129 Allfarthing Lane, Wandsworth, Surrey, London, S.W., England. He and Georginia Elizabeth Baird, his American cousin corresponded.
An undated, unsourced newspaper article (don't you hate people who do this?) is entitled, "Metro. and City News": Inspector William McBride, whose retirement was announced last week, was official photographer to the Metropolitan Police.
During the twenty-one years he held the position he displayed a genuis in the art and science of photography, and scores of criminals have been convicted on infinitesimal clues which would have been entirely lost had not McBride, in a way which was sometimes uncanny, showed them in their true significance.
When a burlar a few years ago was faced with photographic proofs that his boots had trodden on a tapestry-covered couch, Lord Darling, the presiding judge, asked McBride how he managed to take the photographs, and his lordship publicly complimented the Inspector on his wonderful wizardry.
McBride made a special study of photographing finger-prints made on innumerable objects in every conceivable position , and the result was that he skillfully brought into full photographic light a variety of finger-prints which had formerly been regarded as impossible of being copied by the camera. The Admiralty and War Office frequently availed themselves of McBride's expert knowledge.
On one occasion the Government desired to make the Germans believe that certain naval information they had received from their spies was truth and not fiction. McBride was let into the secret. He faked a number of naval photographs so cleverly that even experts could not detect the imposture. The photographs were duly sent to Germany through the recognized channels used for transmitting bogus information and they had the desired effect.
McBride joined the Metropolitan Police Force thirty years ago. In 1909 he was appointed official photographer with the rank of Sergeant. Four years ago he was promoted to the rank of Inspector.
In nearly every murder case he photographed the scene of the crime, and his interior work--whether of a small, dark kitchen or the drawing room of a mansion--was remarkable for its clearness of detail. During his career he was responsible for many thousands of photographs of every description, and he also taught other Police Forces and prison officials how to take photographs of criminals so as to bring out their prominent characteristics.
First-class Sergeant Madden has been appointed to succeed Mr. McBride."
(I was also sent a very blurry photograph that seemed to indicate that William McBride had a son.)
Will and Janet's second son was John McBride, born before the family emigrated. In 1911 he lived at 12 Wirksmoor Road, Newtown, New Mills near Stockport, England. At some point he managed a bar.
Will and Janet's third son was William J. McBride, born on 2 September 1870. He died on 2 February 1875 in Kansas at the age of 4. He was buried in the Scotch Valley Cemetery.

Joan Fisher June 2004:
Andrew McBride, son of James McBride and Sarah Gregg, I have him born 10 April 1851 at Dundrennan Abbey, Scotland. He emigrated to the U.S. as a single man, looking for a home for his family on the 2 April 1871. His family came out in 1874. When they came out they brought with them Jane McIntyre, who, two days later on 19 June 1874, became his bride.
From a transcript of "the Seneca paper" headed June 19, 1874/ Hymeneal/ Scotland and America United.

Tune your fiddles--tune them sweetly;
Play the Marquis Reel discreetly;
Here we are a band, completely
Fittled to be merry.
Come my boys be blyth and gassy,
Every youngster choose his lassie,
Dance with life, and be now drowsy,
Shy, not melancholy.

On Friday evening last a very pleasant wedding took place at the residence of Mr. James Fisher of Turkey Creek. The parties most interested in the affair were Andrew McBride, one of the most enterprising young farmers Nemaha County boats of -- and Miss Jane McIntyre, a very aimable young lady just arrived from Scotland. At 5 o'clock I arrived at the house of Mr. Fisher and found the bride, minister, and a large circle of friends as is the custom in Scotland. At 6 o'clock firing of guns was heard and loud hussas, telling us that they were coming and sure enough way off in the distance we saw a procession of footmen, horsemen, and scores of people in wagons which assured all that the groom had no idea of "backing out", but was coming to claim his bride, who was anxiously awaiting his arrival. When near the place, a large party of the bride's friends went out to meet them and escort them to the house, when near the house one of the bridesmaids (Miss Elizabeth McBride) went out and waved a white handkerchief at them and the crowd, on seeing the handkerchief all ran towards the house, when the handkerchief was dropped, and the one catching it, kept it. If by a young man it is, I suppose, a sign that he will be the next to marry.
The party on entering the house escorted the groom and his attendants, and when all was ready, the Rev. R.J. McCready of ______requested them to rise when in a very solemn and impressive manner he performed the Rite which made Andrew McBride and Jane McIntryre man and wife, proceeding the service with a few well-timed remarks on the character of the sacred obligation they were bout to enter into. The bride was very handsomely dressed in rich brown silk trimmed with very heavy Guipure lace and coiffure, and was arranged with much taste, surmounted with the traditional orange-blossom wreath. The groom was dressed in a suit of black, with white kid gloves, etc. After the ceremoney, such a perpetual hand shaking was never seen, and the heavens never poured such raindrops more copiously than did the friends of the wedding party showered good wishes upon them. The writer of this unites his wish that they meet with the full measure of prosperity that was wished them on that occasion. Then came supper, which consisted of as nice and sumptious a repast as ever was my good fortune to assist in reducing. It would be impossible to enumerate the many different cakes, meats, preserves, jellies, etc. that the tables groaned under, and I will let those who tasted its excellency speak for themselves.
The friends of the whole neighbourhood were present, besides a number of Ladies and gentlemen from Nebraska. When supper was over, preparations for dancing were commenced, the house being too small, a floor large enough for two sets was built outside when the dance opened with a genuine Scotch Reel. Those not wishing to dance were entertained by some very fine music by Mr. McBride Senior, James Fisher and others. A number of Scotch songs were very finely rendered, the singers giving them the true sense and brogue that only the Scotch can give which made it so much appreciable and interesting. Not till morning did the wedding festivities cease, when Mrs. Fisher kindly prepared breakfast for all those remaining. When we all left, we left with the wish "That we may, ere long, be invited to another Scotch wedding." L.C.

Andrew McBride Pioneer/ ? Died Monday
Andrew McBride passed away Monday afternon, May 15 at 2:10 at the age of 82 years. Mr. McBride has been in declining health for several years sickening with heart trouble and other complications due to his advanced age.
The deceased was a native of Scotland, born April 10, 1851 at Dundrennan Abbey, Scotland. He came to America at the age of 20 years and settled in the vicinity making Seneca his home. Three years after his arrival he persuaded Miss Jane McIntyre of his native land, to join him here. She came to America on Monday and the following Friday, June 19, 1874 they were united in marriage by Rev. McCready of Pawnee City, Nebr. The McBrides would have celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary next year.
Soon after their marriage they located on a farm near Seneca and were among the earliest settlers. They underwent the hardships of those pioneer days and reared their children in a God fearing manner which proved to be the pride of their lives. The McBride family is regarded for their Christian spirit to each other and their fellowmen.
Mr. McBride spent most of his days in the Rural District. Twenty-two years ago the aged couple retired from the farm and purchased a cottage in Seneca on Pioneers St., where they have resided since.
Mr. McBride is survived by his widow, two sons, John of Santa Anna, Cal., James of the home; three daughters, Mrs. J.E. Sneed, Mrs. Elizabeth Shackelford, Seneca and Mrs. Margaret J. Ivy Alexander met his death while crossing a bridge with a threshing machine, when the bridge collapsed and he was killed. William was killed when a bridge he was building caved in on him.
Mr. McBride was a devout member of the Methodist church where his funeral and ? were held Wednesday ?? Internment was made in the City Cemetery."
