Parents

James Robert GREIG {M} [P16] = Jessie RODGER {F} [P1566]

Married 8 Jul 1863, Belfast Ireland

James Robert GREIG

Born 14 Jun 1837, Port Glasgow Greenock IGI-C11960-2
Died 26 Nov 1915, Hammersmith London UK
Buried Cathcart Cemetry Renfrewshire
The additional information that supports James Robert Greig being James Gregg [P16] is :
a) in the 1881 census James R. Greig is aged 43 and recorded as born at Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire
b) in the Ellis Island records for the voyage of the Campania from Liverpool on 16 Dec 1911 to New York on 23 Dec 1911 James Rob't Greig has declared an age of 74 with place of birth Port Glasgow, Scotland
c) in the certificate of the marriage at Belfast of James Robert Greig and Jessie Rodger, 8 Jul 1863, James Robert is resident in Glasgow and his father's name is James Greig, Captain at Sea (no specific ages given and no mention that James Greig Sr is deceased)
d) in the certificate of the death of James Robert Greig, 26 Nov 1915, at Hammersmith, London his age is given as 79, a one year discrepancy in age but the date matches with that in the family list. For each of these there are associated names or addresses that provide supporting evidence that we are dealing with the correct James Robert Greig. I think we are fairly confident that the link to the descendants of Robert Gregg can be made, but would be glad to hear as to whether you have any additional information that would either confirm or destroy our belief.
I might mention that James Robert and Jessie obviously believed in preserving the name - between 1864 and 1882 they had 14 children, all boys. Four died young, three died unmarried without any (known) issue and two of the other seven had only daughters. The family has dispersed widely and we have been trying to make contact with any members of the other surviving lines from James and Jessie.
My regards, with our thanks for the work that you have put into your website, and glad to have your views,
John

Notes for above
1.Transcription made 1 June 2003 at Cathcart Cemetery by John Beamish Greig (JBG)
2.The cemeteries and crematoria department of the East Renfrewshire district council are responsible for the cemetery. Their phone number is 0141 577 3913. A staff member indicated that James Robert Greig owned lairs 1295-1299 and 1320-1325 in Section F of the cemetery. However, since there are no plans or markers available in the cemetery, it was not possible to determine with which lairs the identified monuments were associated. [JBG, 04/06/2003]
3.When reading the place of death of Herbert Lea [Greig] and George Alexander [Greig] at the cemetery I was uncertain whether it should be Glynder or Clynder. A check of the Ordnance Survey Gazetteer did not reveal any place name 'Glynder' but there is a small town called 'Clynder' in the present Strathclyde region, formerly Dumbartonshire. It is on the west shore of Gare Loch in NGR square NS2484, Landranger sheet 56, prefix 2....6.... Gare Loch opens into the Firth of Clyde on the north shore opposite Greenock. [JBG, 04/06/2003]
4.No date of death was recorded for Alexander Rodger Greig, checked against photograph. [JBG, 07/06/2003]
At the cemetery I had read 'SARANAS' Lake but this is obviously not correct. Independent reading (IRG) of a negative under a microscope excluded it as being an 'S' at the end but thought it might be an 'L'. So, probably, the original inscription was, correctly, 'Saranac Lake'. [JBG, 16/06/2003]
