IVIE GREG appears on the The Dalmellington Volunteers roll in 12th June 1800. All able-bodied men were required to serve as volunteers under the various 'Defence of the Realm' Acts of Parliament in force. At the time of Hodgkinson's visit, the most recent and prevailing Act was 38 Geo. III c. 27 (1797, Defence of the Realm).
